PostSubject: Boat Filters - Reference Guide   Mon Nov 23, 2009 5:03 am

I have been working on a reference guide for common filters for Boat Engines, both Petrol and Diesel. Have also been listing manufacturer reference numbers and cross references, and will update this as I work them out.

I thought this might be useful to others.. its work in progress.. but I have allready saved myself around £100 just be finding out what parts Volvo badge and using equivilant filters (prob same ones) on my KAMD44

Ian Lennie at IDL Carspares in Alexandria has the ability to cross reference these and provide filters at up to half the Volvo / Mercruiser prices. He also stocks spark plugs for most petrol engine boats and outboards. Not to mention suitable oil etc.

Give it a go.. might save you a few £££ in this recession.

I managed to cross reference all the filters for the Volvo KAD32P with Fleetguard filters and sourced them from Dingbros Ltd in Falkirk. I did save a few quid and got them next day as some of the filters were not stocked items. I also have across reference on belts used for the same. I was needing a water pump belt and had the cross reference number, but the Halfords chappy kept asking me what type car it was for?. My reply to him was it is for a boat with a volvopenta. He replied is that a Jap car. Duh

Here are the cross referenced items for a KAD32P.
Drive belts:-
Power steering Belt - Volvo No. 973487. Alternative part 6375MC or MBF1013.
Alternator Belt - Volvo No. 977542. Alternative 6469MC or MMB987.
Primary Belt - Volvo No. 861564. Alternative 7PK923, 78359 or MMR7925.
Compressor Belt - Volvo No.3581460. Alternative 6PK1138, 68376 or MMR61150.

Filters:- available from Dingbros Ltd
Oil Filter Volvo No. 3517857. Alternative Baldwin B1434 or Fleetguard LF3758.
Diesel Filter Volvo No. 3825133. Alternative Fleetguard FF5074.
Air Filter Volvo No.876185. Alternative Fleetguard AF4919.
Crankcase Breather filter Volvo No. 876069. Alternative Fleetguard AF26188

Thanks John, belts are the same as my KAMD44, so handy to know as I could do with a couple of spares

Best Regards

Craig,

I have just ordered a full set of belts for the port and starboard engines as the starboard engine snapped the primary belt, so I decided just to change all the belts to be on the safe side.

Try this site for belts.

http://www.roadrunnerautoparts.co.uk/Default.aspx

Alot cheaper than Volvo also Keyparts are now supplying belts from Contitech rather than the Branded Volvopenta part, but still charging the catalogue price for a Volvopenta part.

John

Craig,

It does pay to shop about for boat parts just to means more money saved to spend on over priced fuel.

Gave the belt numbers to Ian at IDL, he had one in stock and other one arrived this afternoon.. and again, less than half the price of Volvo..

I am sure Volvo make more money out of spares than they do on the orginal engine :-)

Craig,

Be very careful when ordering an oil filter. I believe the Volvopenta KAD filters are cross referenced to a filter from a Volvo 240 car engine. Volvopenta filter has a by-pass relief set at 16.5 PSID and I think the car equivlent is has a by-pass set at 8 PSID. Fleetguard by-pass at 18 - 20 PSID.

Although an oil filter may have the same dimensions as to the OEM part it may not have the same design spec. Always replace like for like.

There is no pressure relief valve in the filter... you had me worried :-)

Relief valve
The lubricating oil pressure is limited by a relief valve. The valve is located in the lubricating system immediately before the oil filter and is fitted in the filter bracket on the cylinder block’s right hand side. The valve opens at an excessively high pressure and feeds oil back into the sump

Craig,

I am referring to the by-pass that are built into oil filters. Should an oil filter elements restrict the flow of oil through the filter. Then then it will by-pass the elements inside the filter, so thus still providing lubrication.

See specifications for a Volvopenta oilfilter part no 3517857 for KAD32P
