Thought I would add a pic of our last boat. Shame the engine blew. You gotta watch those diesels!! (Anyone want info on Diesel Runnaway give me a shout. It is a painfull experience!)

Hi Mick, I have the same boat it's a 2005 regal with the 1.7 diesel merc in it. I ain't had a single problem with my engine except a fuel problem that was caused by a silly bit of gauze on the uplift pipe from the tank. easilly sorted, take the gauze off & put a water seperating in line filter on & never a problem since. Did your engine blow up because of something you did or more likely never did? What should I be looking out for?

No nothing that was or was not done to it. Serviced every year without fail. Checked mid season also. Turbo Waste gate was stuck open leading to loss of RPM. Taken to Marine engineer for replacement. 5 months later, not sure how (not very mechanically minded), but oil started to gain access to the cylinders causing the diesel runnaway.

Thankfully I had enough knowledge to know to block the air intake and starve of oxygen. Sold her as seen, and the enginneer who bought her, I believe has got her running again some 7 months later.

Like I said, I am not mechanically minded, however the engineer who bought her did say that the Diesel was not designed for sports boating! I dunno she worked very well up until the diesel runnaway incident.

Just keep an eye on it. Have looked online and the runnaway is common on "american" diesels!

You are quite right, the engine will not stop, infact due to the "extra" fuel in the cylindar they will run at increased revs past the limiter.

She was a 2002.

Mines a 2005, so 3 years to look for tell tale signs. I'll get my mechanic to check all that over at service in November.
If one good thing came out of yours blowing it's that you now have the 2460

Single Mercruiser 5.0L petrol. Damn fast for the size but a little thirsty! lol
